UPDATED: Greg and Dave’s 2014 NHL Free Agent Predictions

Where will the NHL’s all-time winningest goalie sign this summer?

After taking last summer off, I have returned with my annual free-agent predictions! I cannot remember why I did not make any picks last season, as these were always a fun mainstay  on whatever blog or radio show I was working on at the time. Come to think of it, I never really was much good at these picks as you can see by my percentages below, but I believe I am still more accurate than Eklund, and there is thought behind each selection. The beginning of NHL free agency is like a second Christmas to hockey fans because there is so much excitement. There is always a shockingly major signing right off the bat, the one that no one saw coming, the small market team signing a bottom-six player and showing them off like they just hit gold in order to appease a nearly non-existent fan base (remember when the Islanders signed Jon Sim in 2007? How exciting!), the one everybody expected, the Maple Leafs signing their next disaster, and of course, the blockbuster trade to make cap room mixed in with it all.

Free agency also brings back a fun time in my life when I was hosting a hockey radio show on the then-free sports network YouCastr, from 2008-2010. The first was with Alan Bass before I did another one with Brett Bodner, and a third on TalkShoe for a short time with Joe Alianello, all of whom have contributed to this site. Previous prediction posts have also had contributions from Chris “Gootz” Hoeler, who has worked in professional hockey. We would do late-night shows into the early morning hours talking about our picks and taking calls, including a memorable show in 2009 when we were on “Dany Heatley Trade Watch” after it was announced he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers, but hung in the balance because he never waived his no-trade clause; he would eventually be traded to San Jose, where he would slip into obscurity after one season.

This summer,  I decided to switch things up and bring in my good friend Dave Zohn to give another opinion on where the following unrestricted free agents will sign. Dave has also worked in professional hockey, and is a lifelong Rangers fan. We have had many a Skype calls about hockey and free agency, and thought it best to put pen to paper and keep track of them all.
